'55' Farm Improvement - Water System, Phase One

Farming is not just producing a crop or product; farming is a continuous activity to improve the environment so that production is sustainable.  Farmers are true environmentalists.

When we purchased the ‘55’ farm, we knew going in that this farm needed a lot of TLC.  The farm had been leased for years; typically, a renter is not as willing to invest in land that is not his own.

Our first project was to have an entirely new perimeter fence constructed. (See blog, A New Fence, 3-7-12) After all, our intent was to graze cattle, not retrieve cattle that might have wandered out through the brittle, old, barely strung wire referred to as ‘fencing.’  Our fence builder, Lee Humphries of Borderline Fence LLC, got the job accomplished quickly.  He was willing to work with us to meet our needs; and I might add, at a fair price.

Now, we are in the midst of our second major project - constructing a water system; thus, retarding the daily use of the cattle in the year-round creek. The project consists of several phases - install new water line; mount frost-free, four-hole waterers; fence out the creek.   We went back to Lee for his assistance because once we find a good contractor; we want to remain with that contractor.

The project begins…a primary trench is dug from the well to the far stock tank placement; a whopping 2000 feet.  Then, a main water line is connected to the well and pipe laid the entire length of said trench with T’s at several water access locations (two waterers, four hydrants) and several cut-off valves.  The T’s result in secondary trenches.  The entire project looks like the proverbial ‘war zone.’

The well required a new pump and new pressure tank as the existing ‘stuff’ was old and worn out.

Unfortunately, the well is located smack dab in the middle of the yard. Becky had the immediate yard looking respectable; fallen tree branches cleaned-up, grass healthy and regularly mowed.  Now, the yard is all dug-up.  Thank goodness Becky is out-of-town and not fully aware of the condition.  I think the trenches will be filled-in before her return, but the grass will not recover.  Therefore,  another job to add to the ever-growing ‘to do’ list as seeding and mulching will be required.  And, rain.

Phase one…nearly complete.
