Fire On A Nearby Mountain

Today was another hot day in Virginia; more, extreme heat is expected for the rest of the week. Even Buddy has relinquished his usual non-stop activity and lies in a cool and shady corner of the porch for a big part of the day.  Each and every animal on the farm seeks shade for a bit of relief.

Late in the afternoon, Becky came in announcing a helicopter dousing a fire on a nearby mountain.  I went out to view a rare (thank goodness) sight.

The fire was small. As the crow flies, the blaze was about three miles from our farm; out of danger.

Helicopter arriving at fire.

I watched the helicopter make several trips; dumping water, turning around to go fill the bucket, and returning to dump water again.

Helicopter dropping water on the fire.

The small fire seemed to be knocked down; the smoke plume had been reduced and was dispersing into the clear blue sky. But, during the dark of the evening, I could see the red flames glowing.

Helicopter returning to refill bucket with water.

I imagine there will be a bit more firefighting come morning.
