Man Versus...

Frequently, there is conflict between nature and man.  Nature is usually victorious over man.

Consider the current wildfires in Colorado…nature is winning as another home goes up in flames.

Consider the destruction, loss of life and home, during other recent conflicts - hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, tsunamis…

Personally, we have just had a slight brush with nature - a rainless, but forceful thunderstorm.  The violent winds took power away from over 800,000 people in our region.  The three of us are included within that statistic.

Man’s technology was not a match for the strength and power of nature’s forces.

Fortunately, we did not lose life or home; we were just inconvenienced for a few days.  No electricity means no water coming forth from the faucets.   No electricity means two freezers defrost.  No electricity means everyday chores turn into challenges; like, making sure all of the livestock have access to drinking water.  Additionally, 90-100 degree day time temperatures hinder the challenge.

We do not have AC, so that is not missed. But, getting a cold drink out of the frig for refreshment is as we try to keep that appliance shut tight against the heat; retaining the coolness within for as long as possible.

Glenn was semi-prepared for such an event.  He has generators to keep the freezers from defrosting, to get the water flowing; but, he had no spare gas to run the generators.   The task of filling his empty gas containers was scheduled for the very next day.  Since the power outage was so widespread, even the local gas stations had no power; resulting in a lack of available fuel.

This minor clash was a real wake-up call for us for future and similar scenarios. When the grid goes down, by natural forces or by decisions of man, we need to be ready.  We will not get any advance notice.  We need to be prepared to be able to survive in this ‘transforming’ America.

Now, we know an important detail was lacking in our plan.  We need to make adjustments.

Are you prepared for what is to come?
